Hey guys and welcome back to the Medical Entrepreneur podcast.
My name is Adam Sewell, and this is where we teach you how to break free from traditional medicine, carve the career of your dreams, and still do what you love.
Do you often find yourself putting out fires that could’ve easily been prevented? You’re not alone. This approach, or lack thereof, is known as reactive management.
Reactive Management
Reactive management is a type of management in which the person in charge only responds to issues and problems as they arise, rather than preventing them from happening in the first place.
Sadly it is quite common among smaller businesses, especially aspiring medical entrepreneurs. This is due to the fact that medical entrepreneurs often take on several roles. They are the providers of medical services, they run their practices and they manage their employees.
This type of workload makes it difficult to set priorities and manage time. However, the inability to plan ahead and address problems before they arise can lead to major issues down the line. The key to overcoming this and achieving business success is a concept known as forward planning.
What Is Forward Planning
Future planning is a concept often used in large companies, but it is equally important for small businesses. It involves looking ahead, identifying possible future events that could affect the business, and setting clear objectives within specified timeframes. These steps will vary depending on the specific needs of your business.
Forward planning is most effective in meetings where you and your team set goals and develop strategies and action plans to achieve them. These meetings can be held daily, weekly, monthly, and annually, depending on how long-term your plans are.
The Benefits of Forward Planning
Forward planning has various benefits. One obvious benefit is having a clear set of goals and concrete plans to achieve them. This translates into increased efficiency and productivity and helps you make better decisions for your business. But there are some other benefits as well.
One we don’t talk enough about is how forward planning boosts your morale and the morale of your employees. Concrete goals give your company a purpose, and that purpose is invaluable for creating a sense of belonging.
Think about it this way: where would you rather work – somewhere where you feel like you are fulfilling a purpose, or somewhere where you are just doing tasks without a clear vision?
Most would choose a business where they feel like they are fulfilling a purpose. And that’s exactly the culture you want to create in your company for yourself and your employees.
The 4 Types of Meetings
Forward planning may seem overwhelming at first, but it is actually very simple.
First, you simply need to understand what you want to achieve. Once you understand what you want to achieve, you need to start organizing regular meetings with your team. There are several types of meetings, each with its own objectives and advantages.
The Annual Meeting
The first type of meeting you want to organize is the annual meeting. The purpose of the annual meeting is to evaluate the past year and, based on that evaluation, to set clear objectives for the coming year.
The Monthly and Quarterly Meetings
Just as important as annual meetings are monthly and quarterly meetings. The purpose of these meetings is to assess your progress during the year and to identify any obstacles that may be preventing you from reaching your annual targets.
The Weekly Meeting
The third type of meeting you want to organize is the weekly meeting. These are designed to keep everyone informed of new developments and to follow up on specific tasks.
The Daily Meeting
The fourth type of meeting is the daily meeting. These meetings are usually organized to boost the team’s morale at the start of the day. Large corporations such as Disney have these meetings and they have proved to be very effective when it comes to maximizing productivity.
