Hey guys and welcome back to the Medical Entrepreneur podcast.
My name is Adam Sewell, and this is where we teach you how to break free from traditional medicine, carve the career of your dreams, and still do what you love.
Do you know how they always say that you shouldn’t mix business and romance?
Of course, there are certain risks we need to be aware of when mixing romantic relationships with business relationships. But that doesn’t mean that running a business as a couple never works out, and there is a power couple to prove this.
Meet Karen and Ryan O’laughlin, the founders of the successful med spa Glow Aesthetics, PLLC.
Before the Med Spa
To understand how they managed to build a successful business as a married couple, we need to take a look at what they were doing prior to dipping their toes in entrepreneurship.
Karen is an accomplished CRNA and before starting her own business, she worked for almost 10 years as an anaesthetist and has a nursing background of 15 years. She spent countless hours in operating rooms before realizing that she wanted more. She wanted to spend more quality time with her children and build something for her family.
Ryan, on the other hand, was already a seasoned entrepreneur at this point. So, when Karen decided to open her own medical spa, he was able to help her with the business side of things.
Love, Business, and Success
Karen and Ryan both recognized the challenges that come with running a business as a couple. However, they didn’t view those challenges as obstacles. Rather than that, they decided to work on them, ultimately making both their business and relationship stronger.
Love, business, and success are usually viewed as mutually exclusive. But the truth is that they can be complementary forces. And this is where their success lies. They realized how they could use their personal relationship to become better business partners.
Transitioning from CRNA to CEO
Karen’s transition from CRNA and CEO may seem very smooth from the outside, but on the inside, she did feel a lot of pressure. Working full-time and starting a business while raising kids was obviously a lot to handle.
She realized that she was now the person everyone would turn to, so she dedicated herself to education and to doing everything she could to improve her skills and become a good medical professional and business owner.
Her dedication, combined with the emotional and professional support of her husband Ryan, made it all work out in the end.
Living the Life
After spending years in operating rooms, Karen now finally feels fulfilled. She is free to run her business however she pleases and enjoys the artistry of aesthetics. As a CRNA, she often felt undervalued, which is now a thing of the past. Her new profession makes her feel appreciated and at the end of the day, that is the most important thing.
