Hey guys and welcome back to the Medical Entrepreneur podcast.
My name is Adam Sewell, and this is where we teach you how to break free from traditional medicine, carve the career of your dreams, and still do what you love.
If you’re a nurse practitioner, chances are you’re sick of being overworked, underpaid, and generally mistreated by your employer and other healthcare professionals. It’s no secret that nurse practitioners are looked down upon by others in the field, despite having a crucial role in the healthcare process.
Sadly, it doesn’t seem like the discrimination against nurses is coming to an end soon, so it’s about time you break free from the mainstream medical system and start a business of your own. That may seem intimidating at first, but it’s a lot easier than you might think. All you have to do is follow the 4 steps I will share with you.
The First Step: Identifying High-Demand Markets
The first step for starting your own medical business is identifying high-demand markets. Whatever you do, don’t skip this step because it is absolutely crucial. If you want to succeed in the medical field, you need to provide services that people want and need.
The most profitable markets are usually outside of mainstream medicine. The biggest and probably also the easiest is weight loss. The weight loss industry is huge, and for good reason. Helping overweight people lose weight will drastically improve the quality of their lives and extend their life expectancy by a lot. So this is something that is always in high demand.
Another very strong market that is currently booming is aesthetics. It is growing fast and now is the perfect time to enter it. A lot of people think that you have to open a big medspa to be successful in aesthetics, but that is far from the truth. You can start small by hosting Botox parties and selling skincare products and slowly invest in a physical location.
There are several other high-demand markets worth checking out. Of course, when choosing, make sure to choose one that also suits your interests and strengths.
The Second Step: Building a Company
The next step is to actually open a company. This may seem overwhelming at first and you may ask yourself what kind of company you need, what the difference between an LLC and a PLLC is, and how is all of this regulated in your state.
I think most people stop at this step because they are too intimidated by the legal aspect of opening a business. But in reality, it is much easier than you think. In most states, you will not need to register a PLLC, a regular LLC will be enough. Of course, it’s worth looking into the potential benefits your state offers for PLLCs, but a regular LLC will serve most of you well to start with.
The Third Step: Finding a Medical Director
Depending on the state you are opening a business in, you may need a medical director. A medical director is a licensed doctor who oversees medical procedures in a healthcare facility. He or she makes sure that standards are maintained and that everything meets the regulatory requirements.
Most licensed doctors are open to this type of arrangement, so it won’t be difficult to find someone for the job. Just make sure you trust the person you will be working with, as they will sign all the paperwork and be involved in any legal disputes.
However, it should be noted that in some states you do not need a medical director if you are a nurse practitioner.
The Fourth Step: Building a Good Digital Presence
The last and most important step is to establish a good digital presence. This step is overlooked by many medical entrepreneurs, but it is crucial for the success of any modern business, especially a medical one.
On which platforms and exactly how you will build your digital presence depends on a number of factors, such as the area in which you are active, your target audience, and the type of content you want to create. You should definitely look at the possibility of creating a website that displays at least some basic information about you, your company, and your services. In addition, you should also set up some form of email marketing and open up some social media channels.
