Hey guys and welcome back to the Medical Entrepreneur podcast.
My name is Adam Sewell, and this is where we teach you how to break free from traditional medicine, carve the career of your dreams, and still do what you love.
Let’s face it. We’ve all been there… You set a goal for yourself, and then you give up before even really giving it a go. It’s far more common than you think, and you definitely shouldn’t beat yourself up about it. Instead, you should use the opportunity to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it.
Chances are, you set yourself up for failure from the get-go. Or as I like to put it – you didn’t align yourself for success. If that’s the case, you’re at the right place! Because in today’s episode, I will help you do just that in two very easy steps.
I certainly wish I had learned this earlier myself, because it cost me a lot of mistakes. And I don’t want you to make the same mistakes.
So without further ado… let’s get into it!
What is Alignment and Why is it So Important?
The word alignment is being tossed around more and more these days, and with good reason. It is one of the key factors affecting our mental well-being and, as already mentioned, success.
When we are aligned, everything feels easy and in place. We’re not overwhelmed easily and we don’t overthink every little thing. As a result, success is a lot more likely, more fun, and way less exhausting.
When we are not aligned, however, nothing seems to go as planned and we quickly become frustrated. The easiest tasks suddenly seem much harder and our motivation slowly fades, making it much harder to succeed.
Unfortunately, the latter seems to be much more common today. So what can you do to change this?
What’s the Best Way to Align Yourself for Success?
The best way to align yourself for success is the exact opposite of what most people are doing. Let me explain.
Most people focus on the outcomes they want. They want to read a book, run a marathon or know how to use Botox. This may seem perfectly normal to you, and chances are you think like this too. But in reality, the outcomes are exactly that – outcomes. They are the final result, not the first or second phase.
But what are the first and second phases?
3 Layers of Behavior Change
There are 3 layers of behavior change:
- Outcomes
- Processes
- Identity
Outcomes are things that you want to happen. Maybe you want to lose weight, grow your med spa, publish a book, etc.
Processes are the systems and habits that lead to outcomes, such as a new gym routine that will help you lose weight, a new cold-calling strategy that will increase the number of clients in your med spa, or a stricter writing schedule that will force you to write.
A lot of people already have the processes and know their desired outcomes, but they struggle with their identity. Your identity is your beliefs, your worldview, and most importantly your self-image. So, most people try to grow by focusing on the outcomes they want and going back to the processes they need without ever reaching their identity.
But the best way to grow and align yourself for success is to first change your identity. The new identity will then lead you to the right processes and eventually to the desired outcomes.
In other words, the goal is not to read a book, the goal is to become a reader. The goal is not to run a marathon, the goal is to become a runner. And the goal is not to know how to do Botox, the goal is to become an injector.
If you’re a reader, reading books will be second nature to you. If you’re a runner you are much more likely to complete a marathon. And if you’re an injector, you’ll not only know how to inject Botox, but you’ll also be able to improve your skills and keep up-to-date with all the technological innovations in the field.
Now you are probably wondering how to actually achieve this and change your identity.
The 2 Steps to Successfully Change Your Identity
You can change your identity in two simple steps.
- You need to decide what kind of person you need to be to achieve the outcome you want
Whatever your ultimate goal is, take a step back and ask yourself: who do I have to be to make this happen? It’s a very quick and simple process that will only take you a few minutes but will change your life forever.
- Prove it to yourself with small wins
When you know who you need to become, focus on the small wins, not the big goal. Each small victory will confirm your new identity and give you the motivation and drive to continue on this new path.
This little trick will save you a lot of pain and mistakes. Especially for those of us who work in the medical field – we are so used to pushing ourselves, hustling, and grinding. But when you change your identity, everything that needs to happen just naturally happens.
I hope this guide helps you reach all of your goals. And if you think you’re ready to start your own journey as a medical entrepreneur, make sure to follow us on social media and subscribe so you never miss an episode!
